Mediterraneo
Restaurant, Dallas, Texas
As
the name implies, Mediterraneo is everything wonderful about Italian
food and ambiance. The restaurant site selected was 5,000 sq. ft.
of unfinished space in a one story appendage to a mid rise office
building. The owner, a native of northern Italy, asked us to create
an atmosphere that would transport the diner to sunny climes of
the Mediterranean, with its light, warmth and charm. A place where
everyone feels comfortable regardless of dress or time of day.
A modest
project cost of $157/per sq. ft. was established. We created faux
Roman forms, such as arches, thick walls that appear to be structural
and groin vaulted ceilings carefully detailed from inexpensive gypsum
wall board. The lighting design was extremely important, providing
subtle surprises, as well as the expected art and accessories individually
accented. Sconces and chandeliers added to the illusion. The seating,
upholstery, millwork, tile and wood flooring were selected to support
the Northern Italy experience. Even the lace curtains added an informal
touch to make one feel at home.
Despite
the Old World refinements, the entire effect is definitely contemporary.
